We spent New Year’s Eve with Juli’s mom side of the family. We had a well prepared dinner, drank some champagne at midnight and watched the sky get filled with fireworks from every direction, including some of our own.
Afterward, we drove to a neighborhood in La Plata where we waited as the streets filled with thousands of people to watch a 30 ft paper mache doll blow up from explosives. Every neighborhood in La Plata builds one and competes with one another for a prize. Kids and families ask for money to buy wood, newspaper, paint and other supplies to build these massive structures. Some of the other neighborhoods built The Smurfs, a castle with all the Disney characters, Bolt and Noah’s Arc with an elephant that shot out water. The one we watched was a centaur (half man, half horse).
